YUMI

YUMI is an American-born, Tokyo-based abstract photographer, originally from Philadelphia. Her practice is grounded in intuition toward her subjects and a rich sensitivity, fusing photography with digital transformation.

Her journey began with documentary photography for the Web3 community FlowerlyFriendsCosplayNFT, to which she remains deeply grateful. While capturing events and activities with an iPhone, she discovered something words could not express in moments of unguarded emotion, and found joy in photography. Through a workshop by crypto artist meratakeru, she encountered digital marbling and became immersed in her own method of abstracting photographs.

At a retrospective of Shigeru Onishi (1928–1994, in the collection of MoMA), she found that what Onishi called ""meta-infinity"" aligned with what YUMI had been pursuing — the ineffable. She hopes to convey that there is something invisible inside what you see, and it is yours to feel, and wishes her work to become a beginning of dialogue.

Her NFT collection BringEcho sold out on AVAX — 30 works over 15 consecutive weeks. Works are also posted on zeroone and Zora.

YUMIはアメリカ・フィラデルフィア生まれ、東京在住の抽象写真家。被写体への直観と感受性を核に、写真とデジタルを融合させた表現に取組んでいる。

出発点は、敬意を寄せるWeb3コミュニティ FlowerlyFriendsCosplayNFT での記録撮影だった。イベント活動を撮る中で言葉にできない何かを見出し撮影の喜びを知る。クリプトアーティストmeratakeruの講座でデジタルマーブリングという手法を知り、写真を抽象化する独自の表現に目覚め没頭した。

大西茂（1928–1994、MoMA収蔵）の回顧展で「超無限」という存在様態が、YUMIの追い求める「言葉にできない」と一致していた。「見えているものの中に、見えないものを感じていい」と伝え、対話のきっかけを望んでいる。
