TAKE

In October 2001, at the age of 34, Take suddenly suffered a stroke. Though he was rescued 48 hours later and his life was saved, he was left with severe aftereffects: dysarthria, which made speech difficult, hearing impairment, aphasia, and paralysis of his dominant right hand.

Listening to music, playing guitar, singing songsーthe things that once meant the most to him were all taken away. He was overwhelmed by despair, repeatedly thinking, “I’d be better off dead.”

However, a few months later, he recalled a scene from Takeshi Kitano’s film HANA-BI, in which a paralyzed police officer quietly paints. He thought, “Maybe I can try drawing.” And he picked up a brush and let it run across a sketchbook....

Unbelievably, he found himself able to draw smoothly with his non-dominant left hand. The emotion he felt in that moment is something he will never forget. It was as if the heavens whispered to him: “Paint!”

Six months after the stroke, he cast aside all excusesーand without waiting to be discharged from the hospital, he began selling his artwork on the streets.

This courageous act quickly gained attention and was widely covered in the media. About a year after his street debut, he was scouted by Takashimaya, leading to regular solo exhibitions across Japan.

Beyond solo exhibitions, he covered an entire hospital with his art in Saga, painted fusuma sliding doors for temples in Kyoto, and created murals for sake breweries in Shiga.

Take also devoted himself to public speaking. His unique styleーgiving talks without speaking-has now surpassed 650 sessions. To this day, he continues to offer lectures at elementary and junior high schools for free.

In May 2025, he will hold a solo exhibition in New Yorkーa dream he has long aspired to.

People said a person with severe disabilities like him, Take,
"can’t give lectures if he can’t speak,"
"can’t paint with his non-dominant hand,"
"can’t run a business if he can’t hear,"
"can’t become a professional artist without formal training,"
"can’t exhibit in New York if he’s unknown."

But those limits never existed in his mind.

Take has lived by continuously challenging himself, never boxing himself in.

“In life, there are very few things that are truly impossible.”ーthis is the message he shares with the world.

2001年10月、34歳の時、Takeは突然脳卒中で倒れました。48時間後に救助され一命は取り留めたものの、重い後遺症が残りました。それは、ろれつが回らなくなる構音障害、聴覚障害、失語症、そして利き手である右手の麻痺でした。

音楽を聴くこと、ギターを弾くこと、歌を歌うこと、かつてミュージシャンだった彼にとって最も大切だったことはすべて奪われてしまいました。「死んだ方がましだ」と何度も思い、絶望に打ちひしがれていました。

しかし数ヶ月後、彼は北野武監督の映画『HANA-BI』のある場面を思い出しました。半身不随になった警察官が静かに絵を描いているシーンです。「もしかしたら、自分も絵を描けるかもしれない」と思い、筆を手に取り、スケッチブックの上で走らせてみました…。

信じられないことに、彼は利き手ではない左手で滑らかに絵を描くことができたのです。

その瞬間に感じた感情は、生涯忘れることはありません。

まるで天からの囁きが聞こえたようでした。「描きなさい！」

脳梗塞で倒れてから6ヶ月後、彼はあらゆる言い訳を捨て、退院を待たずに路上で自分の作品を売り始めました。この勇気ある行動はすぐに注目を集め、メディアで広く報道されました。路上デビューから約1年後、彼は高島屋にスカウトされ、日本各地で定期的に個展を開催するようになりました。

個展の他にも、佐賀の病院全体を彼の絵で飾り、京都の寺院の襖絵を描き、滋賀の酒蔵の壁画を制作しました。

Takeは講演活動にも力を注ぎました。話すことをしない独自のスタイルでの講演は、現在までに650回を超えています。今日に至るまで、小中学校での講演を無料で行っています。

2025年5月には、長年の夢だったニューヨークでの個展を開催する予定です。

人々は、彼のような重度の障害を持つTakeに対して、 「話せないのに講演なんてできない」 「利き手じゃない方で絵なんて描けない」 「耳が聞こえないのにビジネスなんてできない」 「正式な訓練を受けていないのにプロのアーティストになれない」 「無名なのにニューヨークで個展なんてできない」 と言いました。

しかし、彼の心にはそのような限界は存在しませんでした。

Takeは、常に自分自身に挑戦し続け、決して自分を枠にはめて生きてきませんでした。

「人生には、本当に不可能なことなどほとんどない」――これが、彼が世界に伝えたいメッセージです。
