Is There Love? Is There a Dream?

Yukiko Nishimura is one of Japan’s foremost haute couture wedding dress designers, with over two decades of experience creating gowns for women on the brink of new beginnings. Her work centers on love at its most heightened and hopeful. Yet alongside this celebration, she has remained aware of children worldwide who grow up in environments where love and dreams are scarcely allowed. This contrast led her into contemporary art.

Trained in calligraphy since childhood, Nishimura later turned to ancient Chinese characters—symbols dating back to 2000 BCE. She began reimagining these forms through modern technology, especially 3D printing, exploring how a 4,000-year-old idea might take shape today.

From this emerged MEIMU—a sculptural embodiment of the character 夢 (dream). MEIMU is not a figure, but a question made tangible: Is there love? Can dreams survive without it? Through MEIMU, Nishimura fuses language, digital craft, and social inquiry to address the fragility of hope and the need for compassion in our time.

Since 2017, she has held numerous solo exhibitions in Japan and exhibited internationally, steadily expanding her presence on the global art stage.

そこに愛はあるか。夢は叶うか。

西村有紀子は日本を代表するオートクチュールウエディングドレスデザイナーだ。彼女の日常はこれから結婚をする花嫁のためにドレスをデザイン、提案すること。つまり、いつも愛が最高潮に高まった現場に20数年身を置いてきた。しかし、翻って見ると世界には愛とは程遠い環境に置かれる子供たちもいる。そのことが常に心のどこかに棘のように突き刺さっていた。

一方で８歳の時から書道をはじめ、大人になってから古代文字の書を書くようになった。古代文字とは紀元前2000年頃にできた漢字の原型だ。この漢字を4000年後の現代の方法で表現するとどうなるのか？書家としての好奇心に駆られた。現代にしかない表現ツールのひとつに３Dプリンターがある。これで、漢字を表現したい。

そう考え古代文字の「夢」とう文字から創り出した立体文字、MEIMU（明夢）。彼女はキャラクターではなく、現代に蘇った古代文字の書である。そこに愛はあるか？愛のない世界に夢が絶たれていないか？そんなシチュエーションに深く問いかけるMEIMUシリーズを作り続けることは、西村の、愛が溢れる世界で人々の夢が叶いますように、という祈りそのものなのだ。

2017年より日本の多数のギャラリーで個展開催、海外のアートフェアにも出展、活動中。
