Usutokine is an art unit formed by the husband-and-wife duo, Hitoshi Emi and Masae Emi, nurtured by the rich natural landscapes of Kyoto and Nara and the traditional culture of Japan. At the core of their work lies a sense of tranquility and deep insight, cultivated from their childhood encounters with the interwoven lives of animals, plants, insects, and flowers.

Hitoshi, who has painted animals and plants on temple ceilings and sliding doors since a young age, and Masae, a sumi-e ink painter, express themselves through distinct mediums yet share a profound reverence for the “life force” that resides in all living beings. Encountering their art allows us to resonate with the deep-seated life energy within ourselves, providing a moment of introspection amid the chaos of modern society.

The central theme explored by Usutokine is “Oni” (demons/ogres)—not as literal beings, but as representations of the fundamental laws governing the natural world, the very energy that flows through the land. They visualize these laws of life as “Oni” and depict them on traditional Japanese paper (washi). Their Oni, which exude an overwhelming presence and stir the viewer’s soul, are imbued with profound spirituality, possessing the power to encourage dialogue with one’s inner self.

Usutokine believes in the transformative power of art to change the world. 若くから寺院の天井や襖に動植物を描き続けてきたヒトシと、水墨画家であるマサエ。異なる表現を持つ二人が共通して大切にするのは、すべての生命に宿る「いのち」の輝きである。彼らの作品に触れることは、私たち自身の奥底にある生命のエネルギーと共鳴し、混沌とした現代社会の中で自分自身と向き合う時間を与えてくれる。
