Hitomi Orimo

Mixed Media Artist

Born in Tokyo, Hitomi Orimo creates sculptures, lamps, and other works that accompany and become a part of our lives, viewing space as a place people return and go out to.

She has had a strong interest in making things and space since childhood, which led her to major in spatial design at a specialty college. In college, she gravitated toward lighting as it affects the feeling of the space and creates the time spent there. After graduation, she began making lamps with wood and glass, having learned the basics of craftsmanship at a woodcraft workshop and stained glass class.

As she continued to create lamps, she realized that the light that leaks out when the lamp gets lit and the shadows that fall from the shade are part of the work, and that the work shows different faces depending on the space and the amount of light coming in from outside. These realizations led her to the current style of combining different materials in her sculpture.

Constantly observing what kind of light meets the object and what shape its shadow makes, she explores the unity and balance between light and shadow and different materials.

She has been exhibiting her work mainly in group and solo exhibitions and international art fairs since 2000.
