Heinä (Mixed Media)
Yuri Tsusaka, under her penname Heinä, creates freestyle panoramas while questioning and answering within herself with her own unique aesthetic. Her work With Innocence is the foundation of her art. Heinä was born at the foot of the mountains in the northern part of Mie Prefecture in 1987, a place with abundant natural scenery, giving her a free and unique sensibility. Her drawings always had a natural theme to them from when she was a child and she used to draw sketches in her free time. Heinä, who dreamed of drawing paintings from her childhood, felt constrained from expressing herself freely as she grew older, due to universal social stereotypes, preventing her from painting in a way that demonstrated her personality. Although she first chose the path of interior design so as to avoid painting altogether, she could no longer suppress her creative feelings, so she turned to making collages on notepad paper, and selling her works to fashion magazines as original designs. She later entered the Kyoto University of Art & Design based partly on strong encouragement from her parents. Heinä was once more able to turn to painting, but she suffered many difficult days as it was not easy for her to extricate herself from the curse of stereotypes. The death of her beloved grandmother during this time resulted in her feelings of doubt over her existence formed based on the value judgments of others. She began to realize that the stereotypes imprinted within her were irrelevant to her as who she is, recognizing that she was comfortable in being her pure self, which led to her being able to express this as such in her painting. The supreme message of With Innocence is, thus, the cries of a woman’s heart.
